Date/time/location: Thurs 2/28, Switchyard Brewing, 419 N Walnut, 5pm
Title: Beer: Brewing Religion in the Ancient World
Speaker: Jordan Rosenblum, Belzer Professor of Classical Judaism at University of Wisconsin Madison
It is impossible to tell the history of ancient religion without talking about alcohol. Intoxicants were imbibed on a daily basis both at mundane meals and at festive banquets. All of these tipples were laden with meaning. To gaze into the ancient drinking vessel is to observe the fermentation of ancient religion. This talk will focus on some of the things that beer teaches us about ancient religion and the study of religion more broadly by highlighting beer drinking Babylonian Rabbis and that which beer has the potential to teach us about the religion of things.
