Greetings from tranquil summer Bloomington.
I’m excited to share the 2023 Anthropology Department Newsletter. The year has flown by, and the tranquility of summer has settled on campus. As elsewhere, a sense of normalcy has returned to IU Bloomington, with COVID receding into the background, and pretty much all events held in person once again.
This spring saw the first non-COVID impacted offering of the joint Anthropology/Collins international ASPIRE course titled Self-Governance, Sustainability, and the Arts in Oaxaca, Mexico. This was offered as second 8-weeks IUB course with two weeks of travel in Mexico from May 7-21.
Dr. Fumi Arakawa is the Associate Director of Research at the Indiana University Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology (IUMAA) and an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University. He is also a Research Associate with Crow Canyon Archaeology Center in Cortez, Colorado.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ryan Kennedy as an Assistant Professor and the new Director of the William R. Adams Zooarchaeology Laboratory (WRAZL). Ryan is a zooarchaeologist who uses archaeological animal remains to examine animal commodification and its impacts to animal populations in the past.
