In this class we take what we may consider a very personal topic, sex, and explore what archaeology can reveal about sexual beliefs and practices in the past. We examine what kinds of evidence best reveal ideologies and practices related to sex from the deepest past to more recent history. We will explore how different notions of sex and sexuality were expressed across space and throughout time in a variety of media. We explore case studies related to topics such as ancient birth control and birthing beliefs, Paleolithic rock art featuring genitalia, or nude figurines, 19th century brothels, gender ideologies, harems, erotic art and modern bride capture. This class will require an ability to consider and discuss topics that may at times be uncomfortable for some people. This class does not require that you change your own beliefs about sex and gender but will illustrate the different ideas about sex and gender that have been present in societies across space and throughout time.
