Lecture (LEC)
Topic: Sem: ethnog of communication
The ethnography of communication is all about the careful documentation and analysis of communicative practices, both on their own terms and in terms of how they inform our analysis of intersecting/encompassing sociocultural phenomena. Such practices include everything from gossip and shouting matches to courtroom testimony, job interviews, and ritual speech. While we will be learning about and critically assessing several theoretical frameworks for analyzing communication, our primary goal in this course is to learn methods and strategies for doing this kind of ethnographic research and to gain experience in their application through a series of field work/writing exercises.
