Topic: Primate genetics
Anth-B400/600 Primate Genetics General Information: This course focuses on genetic and genomic research centered on primates from an anthropological perspective. Anthropological primatology seeks to understand primate behavior, biology, taxonomy and evolution as a context within which to understand ourselves as members of the primate order. We will explore the ways genetic approaches can enhance these understandings across a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to: primate phylogeny and classification; interpretation of the primate fossil record; explaining variation in primate anatomy, physiology, behavior, and ecology; population genetics and demographic reconstruction; interactions within and between species (including hybridization); primate conservation, and understanding human uniqueness (or lack thereof). This will include a focus on primate sociality, cooperation and conflict, dominance hierarchies, mating systems, parental investment, dispersal, kin recognition, intra- and intersexual selection, inbreeding avoidance, diet, immune function, neuroendocrine systems, personality, sensory systems, microbiomes, and infectious disease. A basic understanding of genetics is assumed. Graduate students enrolled in B600 will meet with the instructor (as a group) for one additional hour a week, timing to be determined by student schedules. Material: All required reading will be available in PDF format on the class Canvas site. In some cases, optional recommended readings will also be posted for students interesting in exploring a particular topic in more detail. On occasion, substitutions or additions to these readings may be made, particularly when new research is published on a topic -- please check Canvas for up-to-date information on reading assignments. Grading Information: Grades are based on participation (100 points), written critical commentaries on 5 selected readings (20 points each for a total of 100 points) and a research paper (100 points). Thus, each component contributes 1/3 to the grade.
