In this course we will consider museums and the histories, values, and curatorial practices that shape them. Topics include the history and philosophy of museums and the main functions of museums ¿ collecting, cataloging, conservation, curation, exhibition, administration, community connections, as well as related ethical and legal issues. In addition to reading-based discussion, the course will have significant participatory and experiential aspects, including work with campus collections objects, in-gallery study of museum exhibitions, and lab-like development of, and iterative workshopping of final course projects.
