ANTH-A 288 SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK-N-ROLL (SUBVERSIVE CULTURE) (3 CR.)
Taking "normativity" and challenges to it as the major problematic, this course explores this problem analytically, through four major conceptual approaches, and thematically, via pop culture and various cultural expressions surrounding sexuality, illicit drug culture, and transgressive music.

Do you feel like a punk? Do you know what a sexual essentialist is? Are hallucinogens illegal because they open the mind and somebody wants it closed? In short: Are you interested in the subversive culture that surrounds Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll? This course tries to answer these and other provocative questions by taking them on as legitimate academic inquiry. We organize the course around conceptual approaches to the study of ¿normativity¿ and pop cultural and expressive forms that seek to subvert it. The remainder of the course is organized into three broad sections - (1) Sex (2) Drugs (3) Rock-n-Roll ¿ that examine subversive expression around these three broad themes, including various edgy rock subcultures like punk, alternatives to mainstream pornography, and literary works that challenge common sense understandings of drugs.
