Topic: Other than human archaeology
ANTH P600: Other-than-Human Archaeology: Offerings, Pilgrimage, Landscapes, and Things This course will focus on new materialist or post-humanist theory about relational ontologies in archaeology that emphasizes other-than-humans as active agents in people's worlds. We will draw upon contemporary case studies from the Indigenous Americas and across the globe, and critically examine how archaeologists are approaching offerings, pilgrimage, landscapes, and other topics related to other-than-humans in their work. Designed originally as an independent readings course for two students working in Mesoamerica, most of the readings will focus on this part of the world, but we will expand beyond Mesoamerica to read case studies and theoretical work that is foundational and/or complements the work being done in Mesoamerica. Each week, we will choose a set of readings to discuss for the next week. Students will also have a week where they will be responsible for choosing the readings and leading the class discussion. The final product will be a paper that connects the themes to a topic of the student's own interest.
