It’s been a while since we sent out our newsletter. There’s been a flurry of changes and then … well … there was the pandemic, which waylaid so many of our plans. I hope this missive finds you and your loved ones well, and hopefully feeling some optimism as spring promises renewal and vaccination access grows, at least here in the U.S. We recognize that process, among so many others, has been woefully uneven and inequitable.
Much of the country and indeed the world have felt the reverberations of the killing of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25, 2020. Floyd’s death has brought new urgency to the effort to challenge anti-blackness not only in the form of state violence, but also as reflected in other kinds of both formal and unofficial institutional policy and practice. The educational system to which Indiana University and the Department of Anthropology belong is one of those institutions.
Professor Eduardo Brondizio continues to serve as director of the Center for the Analysis of Social Ecological Landscapes (CASEL), a center under the auspices of the Anthropology and Geography departments that is dedicated to interdisciplinary social-environmental research involving faculty, students, and international visiting scholars from across disciplines.
