Friends of Anthropology Undergraduate Research Scholarship

This competitive scholarship/grant opportunity supports undergraduate students pursuing majors in Anthropology. All of the subfields will be considered. Awards of up to $1,000 are available for undergraduate students to fund on or off-campus research or study. Funds can be used toward fees and expenses associated with an individual research project or for attending a field or overseas study program between summer of 2024 and the end of June 2025

Application deadline: April 1

Completed applications, which should be collated into a single PDF in the order below, must be submitted to the director of undergraduate studies. Applications are due during the spring semester. Please contact the department for application deadlines.

A complete application will include:

A completed application cover page.
A CV/resume.
An unofficial Indiana University transcript.
A project proposal. Proposals should describe the proposed research question(s), methods, contributions, a research/travel timeline (500 word maximum).
A short statement of previous experience and how this work fits into your academic training (300 word maximum).
A budget, demonstrating how you plan to spend the funds. Please also include a brief statement of financial need.
A letter of support from a faculty member that comments on your academic work, promise, proposed research, and financial need.

Award rules

Student award winners will be required to attend the Anthropology department spring reception in order to receive the award.
Priority is given to students with demonstrated financial need, who have not yet received research funding from the department. If used for an overseas study program or field school, the award should be used to cover travel expenses and fees, not tuition.
Students may accept only one departmental award per project.
