Thierry Veyrie Awarded New Grant from the Sven and Astrid Liljeblad Endowment Fund

Thursday, April 23, 2020

Thierry VeyriƩ

Thierry Veyrie, an IU Department of Anthropology doctoral student whose research is being conducted in partnership with the Paiute people of the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation, has received a new research grant from the Sven and Astrid Liljeblad Endowment Fund. Administered at the University of Nevada, Reno, the Fund “provides grants supporting research in Native American languages, as well as ethnography, linguistics, folklore, and related subjects, with an emphasis on the Great Basin region.” The Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation straddles the Nevada-Oregon border and, among Paiute communities, is home to the greatest concentration of speakers of the Northern Paiute language. Veyrie’s summer research will further advance his dissertation project on oral narratives in the Northern Paiute language as a window on Paiute culture and history. Submitted for review after the start of the current pandemic, his proposal to the Fund provided for two contingencies—research to be conducted with or without fieldwork travel. This kind of flexibility—among researchers and funders alike—is likely to prove valuable as we find new ways of advancing anthropological research in the current period. Congratulations to Thierry!
