About Sarah Muckerheide

Sarah is currently studying an unidentified mid-16th century Spanish Punta Espada Shipwreck in the Dominican Republic. She conducted fieldwork on the site in both 2022 and 2023. She has traveled to the Archive of the Indies in Seville, Spain to do archival research on 16th century Spanish documents pertaining to early colonial travel to the Americas. She presented a paper on this 16th century shipwreck site at the 2024 Society for Historical Archaeology Conference. She is the laboratory coordinator for the Center for Underwater Science. In this position, she is managing the conservation of waterlogged 16th century shipwreck artifacts that are in the Underwater Archaeology laboratory in the IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. She is also a PADI Instructor teaching scuba classes within the Academic Diving Program.
